How We Support Survivors of Gun Violence & 5 Actions You Can Take

Last month, we partnered with our community to raise funds for the District Alliance of Safe Housing (DASH) in support of their work with victims of sexual and domestic violence. Our event was “Gun Violence and Home” because so many of these transgressions happen in the place where you should always feel safest, your own home.

We were lucky to have Maureen Cain present her recent works from her United States of Ammunition project and to hear from Koube Ngaaje & Bruce Purvis, who both offered insight into the pervasive and toxic impact guns play in the community and for many of the survivors they serve.  We’re grateful to these activists for their work. It’s not tireless what they do, it’s tiring.

Thank you to our partners: Greater Good Strategy, Strongin Collection, and Expecting Health. This amazing community effort enabled us to raise over $10,000 for DASH and USofA.

If you’re able to donate to DASH, please do. Here are some other great actions you can take in your community:

ANTI GUN VIOLENCE ACTIONS

  • Support any and all of the gun violence prevention organizations -- join their mailing list, donate money, and follow them on social media (here are just a few)
  • Learn about gun violence in your community and neighborhood. Check out www.gunviolencearchive.org
  • Expand your thinking to match the scope of the problem. For example:
    • Get gun violence prevention on every agenda (community restriction, corporate statements, businesses banning firearms and calling for gun control)
  • Create policies about gun safety everywhere you can
  • Check in with every man you know who owns a gun. See if he’s okay. Men make up more than 80% of both perpetrators and victims of gun violence

We look forward to hosting more of these events and continuing the conversation. We hope you can join us.
